YOUR FIRST HOUSE

In life, human needs are never thought, they are usually realized over time, a child is never thought she or he needs air to breathe or food to eat, the hunger for both comes naturally, same way over time young adults, the need to make or earn a living comes up, for many especially those who plan to one day have a family or already have one, there is going to be a desperate need for shelter, that is owning a house. The problem with satisfying this need is the fact that not many understand how this need is exactly met, why? Simply because there is a huge veil of ignorance blinding many, this veil is what makes many weigh their personal wants over their need when it comes to owning a house; this is why I felt the need to write on owning your first house.

The basic truth no one tells you, is that there is a huge difference between your first house and your dream house, a lot of people think they are the same, hence why you can find a 40 year old with an averagely good job but yet to be a home owner, it is the same reason why a fellow who has held an averagely paying job of 100k to 250k naira for close to 15 years but yet to be a home owner, it is usually because such a fellow has subscribed to ignorance believes that almost never happens, the most common examples of these believes are;

·         The belief they are likely to hit it big in future, and only then can they make proper moves towards owning a home

·         The idea of waiting to attain a promotional level at work before planning for a house

Are we saying these will never happen, no but it is always better to work with whatever you have now than wait for your big payday, according to our research at Built-Advice Nigeria, if you are earning anything from 150k naira per month or even 1.5M per annum, you can afford to plan for your first house, as there are affordable 300-600 square meter lands you can get, which have a strong value increase prospects, and within a few years as you come to better financial capabilities, you become a home owner, and you see that your dream house with a pool, multiple guest bedrooms, marble finishes, Turkish or old French country furniture, billiard table, study or library, 10-12 seat dining area, it can come later in life when you eventually hit is big.

If you continually refuse to do this, the result will be you watching those below you build a house, even if it is a small 2 bedroom property, it sounds funny and below your standards now, but the fact is, no matter how big your current residence is, once it is not yours, it is not yours, as long as you are paying rent, a fellow who built a single bedroom house is more secure than you, the interesting thing is that fellow can be your driver or the errand clerk in your office.

One of the biggest mistake and most ignorant thing people do when they start earning money, no matter how little, is put too much pressure on their first house or property, and so they spend so much money buying such pressures in rented properties, year after year, meanwhile a piece of building block costs around 200 naira while a bag of cement is just around 1,500 naira.

A wise fellow once said “if you are born disadvantaged, it is not your fault, if you die disadvantaged; it is almost entirely your fault”, how completely true this is, no one can tell, but you cannot deny the fact that there is a strong element of truth in it. There is a reason why young people have complaints about life while old people have regrets, it is simply because although life seems unfair, old people always come to the realization that life gives everyone a series of opportunities to change one’s fate, these are usually spread all across each individual’s lifetime, it is left to the individual to discern properly how to act on these opportunities.
